The University of Bambey is the heir to the Regional University Center (CUR) of Bambey, whose creation dates back to 2004, even if the teaching did not finally start there until 2007. At the time, it was the first experiment in Senegal with the CUR model, but to this day it is still a unique experience. According to the terms used at the end of the seminar on the university card (30-31 October 2002), the missions of the CUR are "to prepare learners for university training (...) and to ensure professional training" , by contributing "to the establishment of qualification conditions for citizens through continuing education" and by ensuring "to enhance and develop assets (economic, cultural and social…) at the level of the establishment site and neighboring areas ”. In decree 2004-916, it is also stipulated that "the CUR is a decentralized establishment of general and short-term university vocational training meeting the requirements of local development", which therefore distinguishes it from traditional universities. Since 2009, the CUR of Bambey has been transformed into a full-service university, following the promulgation of decree 2009-1221, relating to “creation, organization and functioning of the University of Bambey”.
