t was considered the premier technical university in Libya and was composed of five scientific departments. The university was established on 25 November 1981 as Bright Star Technical University in Brega providing high-level education about petroleum engineering and minerals, electronics and petroleum geology. It was renamed to the College of Petroleum Technology in Brega. The Department of Mining, Geological and Geophysical Engineering has been closed and new departments such as mechanical and electrical engineering have been opened. The university contains of a number of colleges like , Engineering management, Engineering, Technical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering. The university is in the region of Brega, an area located in the harbor of a large oil port belonging to Sirte Oil Company and there is a new residential city for local residents and employees of the company, but the location is very far from the main cities was one of the reasons behind the decision to close the university of Education Officials in Libya. The last batch graduated in 2004. The duration of the study was 5 years ending with the granting of bachelor's degree, and the first group was 250 students from different nationalities, while the faculty had forty teachers from different nationalities. The university has high-quality laboratories and workshops. At the time of opening, it was one of the highest technologies in the world.
