The University was founded by the young jurist and educator Nicolás Pinzón Warlosten, who, with the support of a group of illustrious teachers of radical liberalism, established an institution that, since its inception, has allowed the study and free examination of ideas, has welcomed students from all regions of the country, has practiced respect for religious creeds and political ideologies and has promoted tolerance as a formula to achieve peaceful coexistence within heterogeneity. It was called "Externado" because the new institution received the influence of the most modern European educational centers that, at that time, were opposed to the old system of the boarding school, a school of medieval origin, inclined to catechize and inappropriate for the autonomous development of the personality. . Externship implied, then, openness, freedom of study and teaching.
