The Federal University of Pará is a federal institution of higher education, organized as an autarchy, linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), through the Higher Education Secretariat (SESu). The fundamental principle of UFPA is the integration of teaching, research and extension functions. The current Rector is Prof. doctor Emmanuel Zagury Tourinho, elected for the 2016-2020 quadrennium. UFPA is made up of 15 institutes, eight nuclei, 36 university libraries, two university hospitals and an application school. According to the 2018 Statistical Yearbook, base year 2017, prepared by the Dean of Planning, undergraduate education reached the mark of 38,865 thousand students; postgraduate courses, around 9,249 students; primary and secondary education, 1,051 students. There are also 6,769 students enrolled in technical education courses and free courses at the Schools of Music, Theater and Dance and Foreign Languages.
