Lisandro de la Torre 860 – Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz.
The creation of the National University of Southern Patagonia was an aspiration for several decades, in this regard we can mention the decree of Governor Gregores who in the middle of this century proposed the creation of University Centers with a technological orientation. In 1962, the first Center for Higher Studies attached to the National University of the South was established, which became the first institutional precedent for higher level university education in the region. This center, which later gave rise to the Santa Cruz University Institute, together with a series of non-university Tertiary Study Centers, formed the basis for the creation of the Federal University of Austral Patagonia, which since 1991 has operated under the regime of provincial universities. The effective transfer to national jurisdiction took place in January 1996. Since 1987, the Institutions that pre-existed the University have proposed to organize Higher Education in Southern Patagonia. This regional vocation allowed the newly created Province of Tierra del Fuego to formalize its participation in the project in 1989, through a Treaty signed by the Governors of the provinces, with the prospect that the Academic Units would function in four Santacruceñas localities and in Land of Fire. This long process of continuous growth was the product of the constant support and encouragement of the communities in the south of the continent, as well as the efforts of teachers, students, and technical and administrative staff, which have allowed the development, growth, and normalization of the National University of Austral Patagonia. The National University of Austral Patagonia's main objective is to respond to regional demands for higher education, not only for professional training but fundamentally for the production of scientific and technological knowledge. The National University of Austral Patagonia was created by National Law No. 24,446, sanctioned on December 23, 1994 and promulgated on January 11, 1995.
