Santo Tomás University (UST) is located in Santiago, Región Metropolitana, Chile. It is locally known as Universidad Santo Tomás. The university was established in 1988. It is accredited by Consejo Superior de Educación, Chile. Since its foundation in 1988, Universidad Santo Tomás has established itself as one of the leading institutions in the Chilean higher education system, thanks to its national presence and coverage. It began its activities in 1990 in Santiago, teaching six courses and reaching an enrollment of 350 students. From there, it began to advance in its institutional development, which meant that in 2003 it obtained its autonomy from the Superior Council of Education. The following year it begins its expansion process, with the inauguration of ten branches in regions, and incorporates new careers to its academic offer. In 2005, meanwhile, it obtained its first accreditation from the National Undergraduate Accreditation Commission, thereby ensuring the quality of its educational project. Currently, it has 13 branches from Arica to Puerto Montt, more than 27 thousand students and about 45 thousand graduates from its eight faculties. One of the differentiating characteristics of the University is its strong international links, especially with China. The UST is the first institution in Latin America to have a Confucius Institute, inaugurated in 2007 at the Viña del Mar headquarters and which is present today in 19 cities in the country. Likewise, it maintains exchange agreements with more than 110 study houses from 29 countries and is one of the founders of the International Council of Universities in the Spirit of Saint Thomas Aquinas, ICUSTA, created in 1993. On the other hand, thanks to the creation of nine applied research and innovation centers, it has positioned itself as one of the universities with research projection in the country, being recognized in the Scimago 2019 ranking in the 12th position among higher education campuses.
