Created in 1968, as the School of Medical Sciences of Alagoas (ECMAL), the State University of Health Sciences of Alagoas (UNCISAL) is a reference in teaching, research, extension and assistance to the population. UNCISAL offers 10 higher education courses, has a technical school and eight assistance units or assistance support. The institution originated from a group of surplus students from the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), with the creation of the Medicine course. In the 1990s, bachelor's degrees in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy were created. In 2006, courses in technology appear. In 2008, the Bachelor of Nursing was created. Currently, in addition to the bachelor's degree courses, UNCISAL offers higher education courses in Food Technology, Hospital Management, Radiology, Occupational Safety and Internet Systems. The technology courses in Systems Analysis and Development, Management Processes and Biomedical Systems are in the process of being deactivated. The university is also a reference in technical education. The institution has the Professora Valéria Hora Technical School of Health, the only public technical education institution in Alagoas, which is present in the 102 municipalities in the state and offers training to workers who work in the Unified Health System (SUS), through of agreements. In terms of care, the university has the Santa Mônica Maternity School (MESM), the Helvio Auto School Hospital (HEHA), the Portugal Ramalho School Hospital (HEPR), the Death Verification Service (SVO), the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Center (CPML), the Rehabilitation Center III (CER III), the Specialty Outpatient Clinic (AMBESP), the Diagnostic and Imaging Center and the Psychosocial Care Center (CAPs).
