Paraná
Founded by APEC (Associação Paraná de Ensino e Cultura), the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Umuarama was born in 1972, in Umuarama, with well-defined objectives: to promote higher education and, at the same time, to develop projects that collaborate effectively to leverage the development of the region. It was a daring investment that sprouted in soil thirsting for novelty, in one of its best stages of development. For the pioneers – the couple Cândido Garcia and Neiva Pavan Machado Garcia – who came from the city of Tupã/SP for this purpose, the work was hard, but rewarding. It required a lot of creativity, audacity and commitment from both of them, who envisaged an institution able to meet the great demand of non-graduated professionals. In the opinion of the couple, the area of education had priority. There was an urgent need to train teachers for public and private schools, which had almost all lay teachers on their staff. Thus, the Institution began its trajectory with degree courses: Pedagogy (teaching) and Social Studies, in 1972, and Sciences (Mathematics) and Literature, in 1975, which gathered around 600 students. The community viewed UNIPAR with good eyes. Believing that APEC's investments in higher education would contribute to socioeconomic development – in addition to cultural development –, it supported the actions of its directors, who increasingly made an effort to accompany the growing number of people interested in continuing their studies, in following career. Thus, new courses are implemented by FIAPEC (Faculdades Integradas da Apec): in 1980, Administration and Law; in 1981, Accounting and, at the end of the decade – in 1989 –, Psychology. In the following year – 1990 – another option was born for students: the Pharmacy course. In this phase, the institution began to attract students from other regions of Paraná and other states of Brazil. A new chapter in APEC's trajectory thus began: the struggle to transform FIAPEC into a university. Fight won. In 1993, directors and teachers celebrated, with a motorcade through the center of the city of Umuarama, the recognition conferred by the MEC. On November 9, FIAPEC officially becomes Universidade Paranaense – UNIPAR. The moment becomes one of the most remarkable in the Institution's history, as it represents autonomy in the creation of courses. But the achievement went further. UNIPAR directors then began to put into practice the expansion plans, outlined with great optimism and with the intention of contemplating other cities in the State with the teaching of the Universidade Paranaense. Still in 1993, the campuses of Toledo, Guaíra, Cianorte and Paranavaí sprouted. In 1999, the one in Cascavel leaves the drawing board and, in 2001, the one in Francisco Beltrão comes into operation. In line with this growth, in addition to being concerned with the building structure, UNIPAR directors also prioritize investments in technology. Clinics, laboratories and special environments for practical activities are all equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, an initiative that puts UNIPAR on the list of the best equipped in Brazil. During this period, UNIPAR also began to streamline its research, extension and postgraduate sectors. Accelerated, but always looking to the future and firm in its purpose of offering excellent teaching, UNIPAR enters this third millennium with more than twenty thousand students, consolidating itself as one of the greatest expressions of higher education in Paran
