The Regional University of Cariri (URCA) was created by State Law No. 11,191 of June 9, 1986, authorized to operate by Presidential Decree of February 11, 1987, and installed on March 7, 1987. On March 1, 1987, In 1993 it was transformed into a foundation, with the name of Fundação Universidade Regional do Cariri (Law 12.007-A). It originated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Crato, where courses in Pedagogy, Literature, History, Geography and Natural History were taught (full qualification in Biology), recognized by Federal Decrees nº 67.140/70 and nº 69.977/72 and Ministerial Ordinance No. 487/80. The courses in Economic Sciences, Law, Technologist Training, in the Civil Construction – Buildings, Topography and Roads and Sciences (short-term) modalities were incorporated into the University, which are part of the network of the State University of Ceará – UECE. An institution strongly born from the mobilization of the regional community around an ideal, URCA has the great mission, indicated in its regimental text and evident in its practice: “to contribute significantly to the transformation of the regional reality, through teaching, research and and extension. In line with society's aspirations, to become an active agent in the development process of the Cariri and Center-South regions of Ceará, as a priority.” However, its most direct geoeducational range of action goes beyond the borders of Ceará, extending to the states of Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Piaui, benefiting 106 municipalities. It works in the search for solutions to problems related to the economic and social development of the region, sustainable and inclusive development as a desideratum. Due to its main function, URCA also leans on national and universal problems, being a promoter of science, culture and civilization in a creative and inclusive way. Currently, the Regional University of Cariri has as demarcations the constant search for integration with the community, the strengthening of the production of applied knowledge in all its areas of activity, the excellence in the instruction of professionals and the highlight in the training of teachers to work in all areas. education levels. In its evolution over time, URCA has had important expansions: acquisition of the Prof. Plácido Cidade Nuvens in Santana do Cariri, the implementation of its units in Iguatu, Campos Sales and Missão Velha, the approval of the candidacy of the UNESCO World Geopark Araripe with successive successful evaluations a project of great boldness and which is already a reference in Brazil and in America Latin. From a university that previously exclusively trained professors, URCA expanded and increased its strategic task of producing innovative knowledge through the implementation of postgraduate studies and consolidation of research, being the first institution in Cariri to implement a stricto sensu postgraduate program in master's and doctoral level.
