The Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb is the oldest scientific institution in the field of political science in this part of Europe and the only study of political science in the Republic of Croatia. The Faculty of Political Sciences was founded on February 23, 1962 by the decision of the Croatian Parliament as a higher education institution within the University of Zagreb, and in November of the same year, classes in political science began. The faculty was the first academic institution of its kind in communist Eastern Europe, and since its foundation it has operated as a scientific and higher education institution within the University, in all respects equal to other university units. Academic autonomy was the basis of the development of the Faculty and protected it from political pressures and excesses of government in times of crisis. In 1971, a two-year parallel study of journalism was established at the Faculty, which soon grew into a full four-year university study.
